UP!

An Uplifting Exhibition in City Space
August 5th - September 30th

UP! is an exhibition in public space in Aarhus consisting of a series of site-specific artworks that urge us to lift our gaze and look up.

The exhibition presents a unique opportunity to experience exciting artworks developed in interplay with their surrounding environments. Each work of art relates to the specific space it is created for and contains references to the place’s use, history, cultural value and other relevant elements.

The 15 works of art urge us in each their own way to look up. And in different ways they try to uplift our minds, hearts and our consciousness.

UP! puts art in the centre and makes it the sensational element, that challenges, broadens and rethinks the way we experience art and culture in the city space. The works contribute to contextualizing the city’s newfound bubbly energy, spurred by the title as European Capital of Culture 2017.

UP! is curated by Jeanett Tagara and Adria Florea, and is realised in collaboration with the German curator Carsten Rabe along with several Hamburg-based artists who were invited to contribute with artworks that express their fresh perspective on the city of Aarhus.

UP! is the last in a series of five exhibition projects and thereby the culmination of ProKK’s year-long exhibition series OUT OF THE BOX, which is a part of Aarhus ECoC 2017. The project offers a rich variation of artistic production aiming to appeal to the businessman, the homeless person and the tourist alike. The artworks aim to inspire, pique the viewer’s curiosity and consolidate cultural consciousness.

OUT OF THE BOX draws attention to the fact that art is alive and more than capable of instigating reflection and enter into dialogue with the world even outside the four walls of the art institution.

ProKK, the association for professional artists and artisans hereby invites you to the opening of the exhibition UP! - an uplifting exhibition in public space.

UP! is an exhibition in Aarhus city space consisting of site-specific works intended to make us lift our gaze and look up. Each of the artworks reveals an uplifting element relating to the space they are created for. The artists play with the concept of ‘upliftment’ and interpret it both literally and figuratively. Some works are philosophical and challenge our thought, others appeal to our emotive capacity and others yet integrate quite literally in the city space intending to lift our physical gaze.
