The German artist Rupprecht Matthies works with the intertwining of words and art. SPEAK UP is in its essence a distillation of Aarhus’ contemporary mindset. The artist has collected personal slogans and expressions while walking around the city and talking with random people who were asked to donate their personal mottos to the project.

This pool of words was boiled down to one word, a sentence or a saying which represents the city. The words are materialised in wooden cutouts of words, which are painted and placed back in the city space that birthed them. An alternative reflection of the city’s collective consciousness.
