Back to frontpage of SURFING THE GREAT TSUNAMI

Swen Kählert, DE

My work is about a different perspective of landscape and natural topic based painting. Nature is the best example of processes like growth, layering, erosion, gravity, deformation. It all happens naturally and in a bigger context. It is difficult to see at once the reason for the little details, but certainly there is one - even if it is a very tiny one. Nature is not about size. Little parts are as important as the big ones.

I don't copy things - instead I take my time, let things happen and let the paintings/objects grow, step by step over a long time period. Paintings become objects. The line between painting (2D) and object (3D) gets thinner or disappears completely. At the end of this process my art reminds us of things that we know from a natural and anatomic context, like bones, plants, GPS- or microscopical photographs - landscapes. It gives us a different idea of things that we already know but is 100% artificial.

Both natural beauty and the (mostly dramatic) influence of mankind fascinate me. For example a big environmental disaster seen from a distance can still look pretty. Or straight lines can seem to be a graphic pattern in a grown environment. It loses it's contradictory aspect and becomes one.
